Using Boxer

Troubleshooting tips for common problems.

I want the game to fill the screen

Switch to fullscreen mode by pressing F. You can press it again to return to a window.

My game runs too fast or too slow

You can speed up and slow down the emulation by pressing and . You will see a speed indicator in the title of the window go up or down accordingly.

The mouse pointer behaves weirdly

I have a one-button mouse but my game needs two buttons

Hold down as you click the mouse button to imitate a right-click.

I keep switching OS X Spaces while playing

The default controls for some DOS games can conflict with the Ctrl⇠⇡⇢⇣ shortcuts used for switching OS X Spaces. To avoid this you can:

The function keys don’t work

Newer Mac keyboards reserve the function keys for OS X functions like Exposé and Dashboard.

To get these keys to work normally in DOS, hold down the fn key as you press the function key. You can toggle this keyboard behaviour under the Keyboard & Mouse pane in System Preferences.

If you have manually assigned a function key to something in OS X, it may not be affected by the fn key. In this case, hold down as you press the function key.

My keyboard types the wrong characters for some keys

Boxer emulates an MS-DOS PC keyboard layout, so special characters (such as punctuation) are sometimes in different places than your Mac keyboard. Try nearby keys to find the character you’re looking for. If you have trouble finding \, you can use / for file paths instead—just like the OS X Terminal.

The CD music for my game does not play

Unfortunately, Boxer currently does not support audio tracks on CD-ROMs. Many DOS CD-ROM games use CD audio tracks for music but will be unable to play them in Boxer.

The audio tracks are still available in OS X, and as a workaround you could play the tracks in iTunes while playing the game. Many games also have an option to play lower-quality MIDI music instead of CD audio.

My game asks me to swap CDs, but doesn’t recognise the new CD

Boxer’s support for multi-CD games is currently very limited. However, you could try one of the following:
